Hiking Tour “Durchs Tor” – Along the Dachstein South Walls

Many of our guests ask us about our personal favorite hikes. One we always love to recommend is the “Durchs Tor” hike. This tour offers an unforgettable mountain experience for anyone who is physically fit, whether you’re a beginner or returning to hiking.

Here’s what our favorite route looks like:

The day begins early at the bus stop, where we hop on the free hiking bus. Even the ride to the base station of the Dachstein cable car builds excitement. From there, we start towards the Südwandhütte. The entire hike is marked by spectacular views that quickly make you forget any effort.

The Next Stage

From the Südwandhütte, the trail continues with gentle climbs and scree fields, always following the impressive Dachstein South Wall. The path leads us to the “Gate” – a distinctive rock passage reached by a slightly steeper section. If you’re lucky, you might spot chamois grazing in this stunning landscape. After the challenging but rewarding ascent, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of the Salzburg mountains – the perfect spot for a well-deserved break!

A Scenic Descent to Bachlalm

Once refreshed, the trail leads downhill to Bachlalm – a true highlight of the tour. Here, you can feed the famous, friendly marmots. With a few carrots or peanuts, you might even get to feed or pet the “Mangei” (local dialect for marmots) right out of your hand.

The return to the Ramsau alpine area takes us via Maralmboden – a gently ascending, broad, and relaxing path. This ends at Neustattalmen, where we make sure to stop at the rustic Pernerhütte. On the sunny terrace, we enjoy a hearty snack and a cold beer, knowing the bus stop for the return trip is conveniently right next door.
